I am a retired P.A. residing in Gauteng finding pleasure in the simple things in life and custom making colourful classic and funky crocheted blankets, every stitch made with love, is my new journey ….

Crochet work is a portable activity …. all you need is yarn, hook and your hands ….. it is relaxing has some wonderful unexpected benefits, and there is no age restriction, it is an activity for young and old:

  • Reduces stress by distracting the brain from the anxieties of life;
  • Improves memory and as some patterns involve maths, is a great way to keep your mind sharp and focused;
  • Supports fine motor skills, dexterity and hand-eye co-ordination; and
  • Creates community and social connections – people and groups crochet various items to donate to hospitals, hospice, old age homes or even crochet for specific charity purposes.

During the years 1845 to 1849

When Ireland was facing the Great Irish Potato Famine, impoverished men, women and children joined a cooperative to produce crochet products, as an alternative way to earn money and make a living.  Crochet had been invented as a cheap substitute for traditional lace making, and its reputation for being an inferior craft was shaken off when Queen Victoria gave Irish crochet a boost during the Great Irish Potato Famine, when she purchased crocheted lace produced by Irish women struggling to make a living, giving it the royal seal of approval.

And then almost 100 years later, In the 1940’s crochet work made a significant contribution to the British and American wartime efforts.
